Microsoft and Verizon Plot an iPhone Rival

"Microsoft Corp. and Verizon Wireless are in talks to launch a touch-screen multimedia cellphone on the carrier's network early next year, in an ambitious effort to challenge Apple Inc.'s iPhone, according to people familiar with the matter.

The discussions are a gambit by Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer to energize a mobile business that has lost buzz among consumers and software developers to Apple's iPhone and Google Inc.'s Android.

Microsoft is a major player in software for cellphones, but it is working hard to develop a new device that will rival Apple's.

"The singer acknowledged she noticed the initial sniggers when she got onstage for her performance on "Britain's Got Talent." But she said she didn't let it get to her. If nothing else, it fueled her motivation.

"I just thought mentally, I'll show them, so I did," she said. "If people are cynical, you try and win them 'round and it worked. It must have been a miracle, but it worked."

MISS USA 2009 TO BE DECLARED APRIL 19

SEATTLE PI - PREVIEWS ALL OF THE CONTESTANTS

The activities started this week with all of the contestants photographed in their gowns, swimwear and more.

Learn a little about each one and view their photos on line as each competes in evening gown and swimwear segments of the Miss USA 2009 Presentation Show, April 13 in Las Vegas. The Presentation Show, plus individual interviews with the judges, will reduce the field of 51 contestants to 15 finalists, to be announced at the start of Sunday's telecast that will climax with the announcement of the winner.
