Technical problems have led Princeton University to ban some iPad tablets from its network.

If you're keeping score, here's the current tally: Israel has banned the iPad. Norway's prime minister thinks it's "excellent." Reviewers gushed about the new device. And now we hear that the IT team at Princeton University is shaking its fists at Apple's tablet computer.

Why? The iPad has been messing up its network.

When an iPad wants to connect to Princeton's Wi-Fi network, the device asks for permission from the university's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) system. The school's Wi-Fi basically replies with, "Of course you can use our network. Here's your temporary IP address, which you'll need to get around the Internet. You're free to use this IP address for the next few hours. But, Mr. iPad, please let us know if you'd like to keep it for longer. If you don't renew it, we'll give the IP address to another computer so that they can use our Wi-Fi."

It's common for these temporary IP addresses to change hands every six hours. But some iPads seem to keep using their assigned numbers without renewing them.

"The iPad owner is often unaware of any problem," writes Princeton's computer staff. "Nevertheless, it is an issue because it can interfere with service to other devices. Once the iPad has allowed its DHCP lease to expire, the DHCP server may lease the same IP address to another client."

When these overlaps occurs, they can confuse the Wi-Fi system, the iPad, and the next computer that checks out the IP address. Princeton says about half of the iPads using Princeton's network have malfunctioned in this way.

"When an individual iPad malfunctioned, we would contact the owner to advise him or her of the problem," the university says. "When the same iPad malfunctioned a second time, we would block that device from using our network, and contact the owner again."

While Princeton banished certain iPads from its network, it has not banned the device, as Israel has. In fact, the school has since figured out a workaround and has been communicating with Apple to solve the problem permanently.

This sounds like a classic case of first-generation woes. Apple – and every other computer company for that matter – always needs to iron out the wrinkles that come with new devices and services. Perhaps its a good time to remind readers of the Monitor's appeal for patience in an era of "buy, buy, buy!"

Tax Extensions - Can't Get it Done? File for an Extension

April 15 is coming up quickly, and if you haven't filed your 2010 tax returns yet, you may want to fill out a Tax Extension Form.

A Tax Extension Form allows taxpayers extra time to fill out their 2010 returns, six more months to be exact. However, the IRS notes that it is "not an extension of time to pay" and any balance due must be paid when you file your extension.

You can find the 2010 Tax Extension Form at the IRS Web site here.

The IRS specifically recommends a service called FreeFile to fill out your extension form.

The official Tax Extension Form is known as IRS Form 4868. You must file such an extension form for both federal and state taxes.

Depression Treatment: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy As Effective As Anti-Depressant Medication, Study Suggests

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2008) — Research shows for the first time that a group-based psychological treatment, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), could be a viable alternative to prescription drugs for people suffering from long-term depression.

In a study, published December 1, 2008 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, MBCT proved as effective as maintenance anti-depressants in preventing a relapse and more effective in enhancing peoples' quality of life. The study also showed MBCT to be as cost-effective as prescription drugs in helping people with a history of depression stay well in the longer-term.

The randomised control trial involved 123 people from urban and rural locations who had suffered repeat depressions and were referred to the trial by their GPs. The participants were split randomly into two groups. Half continued their on-going anti-depressant drug treatment and the rest participated in an MBCT course and were given the option of coming off anti-depressants.

Over the 15 months after the trial, 47% of the group following the MBCT course experienced a relapse compared with 60% of those continuing their normal treatment, including anti-depressant drugs. In addition, the group on the MBCT programme reported a higher quality of life, in terms of their overall enjoyment of daily living and physical well-being.

The study was led by Professor Willem Kuyken at the Mood Disorders Centre, University of Exeter, in collaboration with colleagues at the Centre for Economics of Mental Health (CEMH) at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London, Peninsula Medical School, Devon Primary Care Trust and the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit.

Members of the study team from the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London also compared the cost of providing MBCT programmes with the cost of maintenance anti-depressant treatment. The findings suggest that MBCT provides a cost-effective alternative to anti-depressant drugs. Unlike most other psychological therapies, MBCT can be taught in groups by a single therapist, and patients then continue to practice the skills they have learned at home by themselves. Therefore, MBCT is less costly than individual treatments and is not dependent on having the large number of trained therapists needed for one-to-one psychological treatments so could help the National Health Service shorten its waiting lists for psychological therapies.

(NaturalNews) In response to growing awareness about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, what does the manufacturer of one of the world's most notable artificial sweeteners do? Why, rename it and begin marketing it as natural, of course. This is precisely the strategy of Ajinomoto, maker of aspartame, which hopes to pull the wool over the eyes of the public with its rebranded version of aspartame, called "AminoSweet".

Over 25 years ago, aspartame was first introduced into the European food supply. Today, it is an everyday component of most diet beverages, sugar-free desserts, and chewing gums in countries worldwide. But the tides have been turning as the general public is waking up to the truth about artificial sweeteners like aspartame and the harm they cause to health. The latest aspartame marketing scheme is a desperate effort to indoctrinate the public into accepting the chemical sweetener as natural and safe, despite evidence to the contrary.

Aspartame was an accidental discovery by James Schlatter, a chemist who had been trying to produce an anti-ulcer pharmaceutical drug for G.D. Searle & Company back in 1965. Upon mixing aspartic acid and phenylalanine, two naturally-occurring amino acids, he discovered that the new compound had a sweet taste. The company merely changed its FDA approval application from drug to food additive and, voila, aspartame was born.

G.D. Searle & Company first patented aspartame in 1970. An internal memo released in the same year urged company executives to work on getting the FDA into the "habit of saying yes" and of encouraging a "subconscious spirit of participation" in getting the chemical approved.

G.D. Searle & Company submitted its first petition to the FDA in 1973 and fought for years to gain FDA approval, submitting its own safety studies that many believed were inadequate and deceptive. Despite numerous objections, including one from its own scientists, the company was able to convince the FDA to approve aspartame for commercial use in a few products in 1974, igniting a blaze of controversy.

In 1976, then FDA Commissioner Alexander Schmidt wrote a letter to Sen. Ted Kennedy expressing concern over the "questionable integrity of the basic safety data submitted for aspartame safety". FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill believed that a grand jury should investigate G.D. Searle & Company for lying about the safety of aspartame in its reports and for concealing evidence proving the chemical is unsafe for consumption.

Despite the myriad of evidence gained over the years showing that aspartame is a dangerous toxin, it has remained on the global market with the exception of a few countries that have banned it. In fact, it continued to gain approval for use in new types of food despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things.

The details of aspartame's history are lengthy, but the point remains that the carcinogen was illegitimately approved as a food additive through heavy-handed prodding by a powerful corporation with its own interests in mind. Practically all drugs and food additives are approved by the FDA not because science shows they are safe but because companies essentially lobby the FDA with monetary payoffs and complete the agency's multi-million dollar approval process.

Changing aspartame's name to something that is "appealing and memorable", in Ajinomoto's own words, may hoodwink some but hopefully most will reject this clever marketing tactic as nothing more than a desperate attempt to preserve the company's multi-billion dollar cash cow. Do not be deceived.

Fourteen Hydroxycut products, marketed as fat burners, low-cost diet aids, and energy enhancers, are being recalled voluntarily by the manufacturer after the FDA received 23 reports of serious liver injuries ranging from jaundice to death.

The FDA is warning consumers to immediately stop using the popular
Hydroxycut line of dietary supplements because of reports of one death
and serious health problems such as jaundice and other liver injuries.

The economy is sputtering, and companies say they will make nothing but perfect-10 hires. Meanwhile, Baby Boomers are retiring by the millions -- and everyone wants to be a millionaire, not a wage earner. Where does all this leave employers and workers in their never-ending struggle to tip the balance in the American labor market?

From the perspective of an annual survey commissioned by staffing firm Manpower, these dynamics yield a number of occupations for which openings are hard to fill. Among white-collar jobs, the following positions make Manpower’s 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill list: engineers, technicians, sales reps, accountants and IT staff. And on the blue-collar side, the list includes machinists and machine operators, skilled tradespeople, mechanics, laborers and production operators.

But labor-market power is shifting toward employers as the economy continues to soften. While in Manpower’s 2007 survey of 2,000 US firms 41 percent of employers reported difficulties filling positions, the 2008 tally found only about half that percentage of companies -- 22 percent -- reported recruitment was a struggle. This should come as no surprise, given that American employers shed about a quarter of a million jobs in the first four months of 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

And many experts, especially labor advocates, take issue with the Manpower study’s conclusion that all these occupations are in shortage. “Our starting point at EPI is where most economists would start: If you don’t have low unemployment and rising wages, you don’t have a shortage,” says Ross Eisenbrey, vice president of the Economic Policy Institute (EPI).

So if you work in one of these occupations -- or want to -- what’s the real story? Let’s take a look at the survey results and get some perspective on what the shortages really mean.

White-Collar Occupations Blow in the Winds of Economic Change

Even as thousands of IT jobs continue to be offshored each year, demand for software developers, systems engineers and network administrators is strong, according to the Manpower survey.

“One of the challenges that IT departments face is finding people who are well-rounded, can communicate with the lines of business and can manage,” says Melanie Holmes, a vice president at Manpower North America.

With fuel prices spiking and oil and natural gas exploration heating up, demand for petroleum engineers is rising. Offshoring notwithstanding, “engineering is going to be around for awhile,” says Holmes. “Oil companies have employees averaging in their late 40s.”

Eisenbrey says EPI data shows labor shortages in a number of white-collar niches, from healthcare workers to librarians, farm managers, engineering managers and environmental scientists.

Some Blue-Collar Jobs Go Unfilled Even as Their Numbers Drop

Even after decades of manufacturing decline, employment of machinists is expected to drop by 3 percent between 2006 and 2016, according to the BLS.

“We’re at the very beginning of that decline; we haven’t necessarily gotten there yet,” says Holmes. “Even if machinists are declining, applicants are in short supply. Kids are not getting excited about going to tech and vocational schools.”

Labor advocates paint a different picture. “Employers are still not willing to pay what’s required,” says Eisenbrey. “It’s a shortage only at the rate that employers want to pay.”

The skilled trades, especially in construction, rank high among blue-collar jobs that are hard to fill, according to the Manpower survey. Carpenters, welders, plumbers, electricians and masons are in demand, the survey says.

But Eisenbrey questions the validity of these conclusions. “It doesn’t make sense that jobs for construction workers and laborers are hard to fill,” he says. “Wages are declining in most of these occupations; 365,000 of those workers have been laid off in the last 12 months.” In April 2008, as the housing crisis played out, construction employment declined by 61,000 jobs, according to preliminary data from the BLS.

Even in our digital age, stuff still needs to get from here to there, whether the trip is across the warehouse floor or around the world. A potentially huge security breach at Heartland Payment Systems in New Jersey includes debit cards issued by a Kentucky bank – and could impact others.

One of those potential victims is Forcht Bank, a Lexington and Corbin, Ky.-based bank that has four Louisville branches. The bank said Tuesday, in a notice on its Web site, that it had been informed of the breach by its debit card processor. The breach would allow the hackers to create duplicate debit cards, Forcht said in the notice.

Heartland (NYSE: HPY) said in a Tuesday news release that its processing system was hacked sometime in 2008. It said it learned of the breach when it was alerted by Visa and MasterCard of “suspicious activity surrounding processed card transactions.” The company processes payments for more than 250,000 business locations nationwide.

Heartland also operates a large processing center in Jeffersonville.

Forensic auditors hired by Heartland discovered malware in the company’s system, according to the release. It said no Social Security numbers, PIN numbers, addresses or phone numbers were compromised.

But credit and debit cards issued by banks could potentially be stolen, the company suggested. Heartland has set up a Web site, www.2008breach.com , to provide information about the incident.

Obama Commemorates MLK Day with Service

Marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the eve of his inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama today urged Americans to act on the slain civil rights leader's vision as he led the nation in a "call to service" aimed at helping people in need.

Obama, who takes the oath of office at noon tomorrow as the nation's 44th president, began his day with a previously unannounced visit to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to meet with wounded troops. During the visit, which lasted a little more than an hour, Obama met with 14 service members recovering from wounds they sustained in Iraq or Afghanistan, aides said.

Accompanied by Martin Luther King III, he then headed to a District shelter for homeless teenagers to lend a hand in a project to renovate the facility's rooms.

In a statement marking the national holiday that commemorates King's birthday, Obama said the civil rights leader lived life "in loving service to others."

"As we honor that legacy, it's not a day just to pause and reflect -- it's a day to act," the president-elect said. Noting that Americans are participating in more than 11,000 service projects across the nation, he appealed to people "to turn today's efforts into an ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of others in their communities, their cities and their country."

Obama said: "Tomorrow, we will come together as one people on the same mall where Dr. King's dream echoes still. As we do, we recognize that here in America, our destinies are inextricably linked. We resolve that as we walk, we must walk together. And as we go forward in the work of renewing the promise of this nation, let's remember King's lesson -- that our separate dreams are really one."

At the Sasha Bruce Youthwork shelter for homeless teens in Northeast Washington, Obama, wearing a white open-necked shirt, rolled up his sleeves to help paint one of the boys' dormitory rooms under renovation.

"I think this facility here is an example," he said as he used a long-handled roller to apply blue paint to a wall. "These young people have a huge potential that right now is not being tapped. Given the crisis we're in and the hardships so many people are going through, we can't allow any idle hands. Everybody's going to have to be involved. Everybody's going to have to pitch in."

Obama told reporters that the Internet was "an amazing tool" in helping to organize the thousands of service projects underway across the nation today.

"We don't want to just use it to win elections," he said. "We want to use it to rebuild America."

Bob May has died from congestive heart failure in LA at the age of 69.

The veteran actor and stuntman was best known for playing The Robot in the 1960s TV show Lost In Space.

May also appeared in films with Jerry Lewis and TV shows such as The Time Tunnel, McHale's Navy and The Red Skelton Show during his acting and stunt career.

Lost In Space matriarch June Lockhart said: "He always said he got the job because he fit in the robot suit. It was one of those wonderful Hollywood stories. He just happened to be on the studio lot when someone saw him and sent him to see Irwin Allen about the part.

"Allen said, 'If you can fit in the suit, you've got the job'."

The grandson of vaudeville comedian Chic Johnson, May was introduced to show business aged just two when he appeared in the Hellzapoppin comedy revue.

Last year, he and his wife escaped without injury when their Californian home was destroyed by fire.

Tub of Peanut Butter Checked for Link to Salmonella Outbreak

"Federal officials are waiting to see if tests on a 5-pound tub of peanut butter in Minnesota will link it to a nationwide outbreak of salmonella typhimurium that has sickened at least 400 in 42 states.

Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek cautioned that the tests that could link peanut butter and the three-month-long outbreak have not yet been completed. Answers to some common consumer questions about Circuit City’s liquidation:

Q. Will Circuit City stores continue to accept gift cards?

A. Yes. Consumers with Circuit City gift cards can redeem them in stores during the liquidation sales. The sales begin as early as Saturday and will probably wrap up by the end of March.

Q. Are Circuit City’s extended warranties affected by the liquidation?

A. No. The company’s extended warranties are backed by third-party independent companies. Circuit City Advantage Protection Plans are backed by Assurant Solutions, part of Assurant Inc.

Q. What about returns and refunds?

A. Products purchased before Friday can be returned for an exchange or a refund for 14 days. When liquidation sales begin on or around Jan. 17, all sales are final.

Q. Can I still shop on Circuitcity.com?

A. Only through Jan. 18. After that, Circuit City’s Web site and its call center will shut down. Also, consumers cannot buy products online and then pick them up in the closing stores.

Q. Will Circuit City’s price-matching policy and its other price guarantees apply during the liquidation sales?
